Why is the concept of Destiny or 'Taqdeer' so confusing?

Coincidentally, I got two people asking similar questions. Here's one of them:

"i hav a very DIFFERENT question. my question is " IF 'ALLAH'[SWT] HAS WRITTEN EVERYTHING[TAQDEER] BEFORE OUR BIRTH & IF ANYTHING WHAT EVER IT MAY BE EITHER GOOD OR BAD HAPPENS BY THE PERMISSION OF 'ALLAH'[SWT] THEN,
""" IF V DO ANY SIN [ SMALL OR BIG ], IS IT ALSO DONE BY THE PERMISSION OF 'ALLAH'[SWT]??????? I MEAN 'IF V DO SOMETHING MAY IT BE GOOD OR BAD'
I M NOT ABLE TO EXPLAIN & THIS CONCEPT"

This is a very logical question that everyone who has some understanding and knowledge of the Islam will get. Insha'Allah, there is nothing to worry about. On the contrary, we should be happy that we're thinking about our deen unlike most people who don't really care to even think for a moment why they're in this world.

Coming to the answer, Alhamdulillah.. the concept is very clear and easy for whom Allah makes it easy. The first thing we need to understand is that Allah has created us with the ability to choose what we want. In other words, Allah does not compel us to do something.

It is true that everything is under Allah's control. Allah has decreed all our actions, good and bad. But that does not mean that Allah wants us to do bad things. If that were true, then putting the sinners in hell would be unjust. Allah, with his perfect knowledge, knows what we are going to do and this is what is meant by decree. The simple fact that you can ask this question means that you are not being forced, but are able to think and then ask this question.

To sum this up:

- All bad and good deeds happen by the permission of Allah
- But only the good deeds have Allah's good pleasure and the bad deeds don't
- And humans and jinn make the choice.. not Allah

Finally, to understand this concept better, here's an example: Take a classroom. If there is a group of students and a teacher instructs them for one full year. During that time, the teacher knows each student well. How smart each student is, How hard working, How disciplined. Based on her observation, a teacher is able to guess, which student will do well in the exam and which student wont. Now, looking at this situation, would you say that the bad students failed because the teacher said so. Of course not! The teacher had experience, therefore she knew. But it was the students who decided to study well or not and the end result came out accordingly. Similarly, Allah's knowledge is perfect and he is able to say with sureness who will go to hell and who will go to heaven. But the end result is in the hands of the people.

I hope this clears the concept of taqdeer or destiny, Insha'Allah. Please read the post more than once if this seems confusing to you and I hope Allah helps us all understand his deen.

Additionally, we must affirm and believe in all the aspects of Taqdeer that have been affirmed by the sharee'ah. We must believe in all the parts that we understand and the one's we do not understand.

I also suggest that you visit this site to gain a better understanding of the subject.

Whatever is wrong is from my own self and I seek Allah's forgiveness for that and whatever is true and right is from Allah.

Allah knows best.

The other side of Taqdeer is that a child birth takes place in a non muslim family he will be remain non muslim till his death, only in rear cases he may convert his religion. It means it is in his Taqdeer that he will be remain non muslim and will go to hail.
pls clarify it.

Abu Mus'ab said...

Well I wouldn't look at it that way.

Unless the child dies young (in which case the matter is in the hands of Allah) everyone has the ability to observe and choose.

Also, there is an opinion among scholars that those kaafirs who did not receive the message of Islam will have to face a test on the day of judgement, after which, either they will go to hell or paradise.

We must keep in mind and have faith that Allah will not unjustly cast anyone in hell fire. Each soul will get what it sent forward.

And Allah knows best.

Well Brothers i have read all what have been written here 1st of all we are not suppose to discussing it and secondly as one of my friend said that if a child born in a non muslim family then what is his sin if he become a non musli well dear my brother abu musa 'ab explained it well but one more adding to it that this is a system made by GOD and if u can see Islam is a largest religion and spreading faster then before when some one come under the umbraila of islam no doubt about it that allah subhan u tala have blessed him with that but being a ashrufull makholokaat he chose the right path, as u said takdir is already written so my dear yes takdir is already written and do u think that and would u be sure that GOD have written only one takdir for one human being may be have written 1000's of them and just want human to choose the proper path even if he choose the wrong one. As when first human Hazrat Adam Alehay slam came to life then allah subhan e tala said to mlaike that i have given the right to chose to remeber and to decide to my this creation so bow in front of him because he is better then u.... please if i am wrong some where for give me and do send me the reply on adnankb@hotmail.com

As salaam aley kum...

Sorry to say but in the below mail from Abu Musab, the example of classroom is incorrect...

To get a good understanding of Divine decree and 'predestination' (This word is incorrect/improper), we need to consider some basic elements.
1. Time: What is Time? Is it not a creation by Allah(SWT), Some say Time is Allah - what does that mean?
It means Allah(SWT) is not bound by Time as we are... Lets put it in simple terms, We know some things about past and we think we know about what is going on, and we have no idea about the future. But Allah (SWT) is not bound by this, proof: Read Ayat-al-kursi (surah Baqara:255), Allah know what happened/happens to his creations, that which is before/after his creation and what we know is limited knowledge which Allah has bestowed to us... The implication of this is that, He knows everything, past, present, and future.
Conclusion 1. Allah knows (not decided/commanded) the past the present and the future, He knew exactly who is going to do what and go where (hell or heaven) even before He created us... If He knew everything, as He can see future, then how difficult is it to write it down... bottom line is.. Allah knew everything and ordered the pen to write it, and it wrote... To this some call 'predestination', which is really an incorrect word.

2. If Allah (SWT) knows everything then why did He create us ? why Heaven and Hell? why life and death?
There are many Ayat in the glorious Quran giving us the reason that He created us for worshipping Him(example Surah Zariyat 51: ayah 56, Surah Mulk 67: ayah 2). And what is unique in Men and Jinn? They have free choice to opt between good and bad.
Conclusion 2. Allah knows (not decided/commanded) everthing and is not bound by Time, He created everything to worship Him, some of that we see and some we do not see and to some (Men and jinn) of His creation, He gave option to obey Him or not and has shown us the consequences of both.

The point to note is that He did not force any human or Jinn to accept His way, rather gave them option, but since He is the creator of everthing including Time, He knows (not decided) the future, and knows exactly where we are going to... hell or heaven.

3. How is a person to be blammed if he/she was born in a non muslim family? Why should he/she go to hell for that?
One of the attributes of Allah is of being 'Just', He is Just, and does no injustic, it is we who do not understand how this works, so we ask Allah to enligten us. There are many Ayat in the Quran, where it is mentioned that everytime a group is brought to Hell fire, they are asked "Did no Warner come to you?" and the people reply "Yes indeed: a Warner did come to us but we rejected him" example (Surah Mulk 67: Ayah 8-11)... And Allah says that He will show people the signs, so that they know that Islam is haqq (the Truth). Proof: (Surah Fussilat (Ha-Mim) 41: ayah 53), then it will be left to the people to decide whether they choose Islam or reject it. A person will not be judged unless he/she received the message (proof Surah Yunus 10: Ayah 47)
Conclusion 3. None shall go to Hell unless he/she opts to do the deeds of people of Hell fire... None shall enter Paradise, unless he/she opts to do the deeds of people of paradise.

4. then the question comes.... But there are many ayah in the Quran where Allah says, He is the One who guides whom He wills (example Surah Fatir 35: Ayah 8), and that He has put a seal of the heart of disbelievers (example Surah Baqara 2:ayah 7).
Yes, it is only Allah who can guide people. But how does He guide? He shows them signs/proofs/evidences and gives them choice. If now, after knowing the truth, a person opts to reject (Kufr) it, then is his/her heart sealed and that is the stage where Allah did show all signs and he/she choose to opt evil (proof Surah Az-zumur 39: Ayat 53-59).

5. Then some question.. A real bad question... Well if Allah did not want to guide me, then how can I be blamed for not believing...
The point is that Allah does like to see all guided but does not force anyone. The first step is to be taken by us..... Similar was the question/case put forth by the musrikun as stated in Quran in Surah Anam 6:148 and the response is there in surah Anam 6:148-150.

As I percieve this to be important, I quote it here...

Those who give partners to Allah will say "If Allah had wished we should not have given partners to Him nor would our father; nor should we have had any taboos." So did their ancestors argue falsely until they tasted of Our wrath. Say: "Have ye any (certain) Knowledge? If so produce it before us. Ye follow nothing but conjecture: Ye do nothing but lie."
Say: "With Allah is the argument that reaches home: if it had been his will he could indeed have guided you all."
Say: "Bring forward your witnesses to prove that Allah did forbid so and so." If they bring such witnesses be not thou amongst them: nor follow thou the vain desires of such as treat Our Signs as falsehoods and such as believe not in the Hereafter: for they hold others as equal with their Guardian-Lord.Surah Anam 6: ayat 148-150.

May Allah guide us all.

Jazakallah Brother Mirza for your very elaborate post,

I think it complements my post very nicely. The point about time that you mentioned really does carry merit. However, I did not included it my post to avoid confusion. But you've put it very nicely, so I think that's been dealt with :)

Since this is slippery ground, I think we are better off not arguing about it. But, thank you very much for stopping by and commenting.

Please feel free to comment and express your views at my new blog

Jazakallah,

Abu Mus'ab

Brother Abu Mus'ab, just a small correction... Do not say just 'Jazak Allah', rather complete it. "Jazak Allah hu khir / khirun"

Barak Allah hu fek (May Allah bless you)
